WAR MEMORIALS - Oxshott War Memorial OS grid ref.: TQ139611

The memorial is located on Oxshott Heath, an area of heath and woodland protected by act of Parliament since 1904. The world wars had a significant impact here, many trees being felled during the 1914-18 war, and still more during the one of 1939-45. The sandpit provided sandbags to protect Kingston during the Blitz. Later, Canadian troops were encamped on the heath, felling timber and playing baseball below the southern slope. After initial controversy concerning its location, the memorial was erected on the present site by Sir Robert McAlpine, a building magnate known as “Concrete Bob”, who had himself lost a son in the war. A service is held at the memorial each year on Armistice Day.
